The
Naman's Story
The
Naman’s family has
been synonymous with food and kindness for generations. Travel back
to the turn of the century when George Elias Naman and his brother,
Michael
E. Naman opened a food market around 1898 in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
Long before TV. and cooking shows, these brothers offered the Gulf
Coast food for the body and service to the soul. Life was good
in Mississippi
until George Naman took a look at the beautiful Helen Zoghby in Mobile.
A love compelled George Naman to move to Mobile, and the family has
embraced the area as special for generations. After the opening
of his store in 1905,
Mobile would become home, he just did not know it yet. Business led George
to open the largest department store in Brewton, Alabama. The
dry goods and food
business thrived for him in Brewton for years. Unfortunately, floods washed
their hearts and stores back to Mobile around 1930.
Upon
George’s welcome return to Mobile, he began an aggressive journey
to open new locations on Dauphin Street. You could buy the latest styles and
quality foods at the Naman’s stores located across from the Cathedral from
the 1930’s to the 1950’s. While Michael enjoyed the jewelry business,
George continued the food business with his daughter Elizabeth’s help.
George’s other children, Emile and Mimi, were successful in the clothing
business. You can still visit Naman’s Department Store on Dauphin Street
today.
In November of 1947, George’s sons, Tony and Alex, along with their sister
Mabel, ventured out on their own with great encouragement from their parents.
The first food store was located at the 459 South Broad Street (Texas and Broad).
During this time, Brookley Air Force Base, the largest employer in Mobile, located
at the end of Broad Street, was in full operation. With great wisdom and foresight,
these progressive young men, in 1951, opened their next food store at Broad and
Savannah. In 1955, the construction was complete on their newest and largest
store, Naman’s Supermarket, located at 563 South Broad Street. This market
remained in full operation until Mr. Tony and Mrs. Cecelia’s retirement
in 2004.
Many memories are told by today’s generation of the Naman’s family.
George and Helen Naman lived by a strict code of ethics; they knew the value
of a hard day’s work and the importance of showing kindness toward others.
These morals and values are alive and well in their family today. Tony and Cecelia
worked hard to build their family business and instill these values in their
six children. Liz, Margie and Catherine became instrumental in the store’s
bookkeeping over the years. Alec and Thomas helped in managing the store,
however, Richard and his daughter Crystal successfully held the reigns
for the last decade.
Cecelia, having learned all she knows about cooking from her mother-in-law,
Helen Naman, was instrumental in passing this legacy to her son Alec.
Not only was
he taught the Mediterranean foods of their roots, but the foundation
of all great dishes.
Fall 2006 is bringing about a change in the Naman’s legacy…or is
it? Alec Naman, with the assistance of his brother, Thomas, announces the opening
of his latest concept of new and unique food services-Naman’s Midtown Market.
Alec and his culinary team have worked for 2 years specifically on this project.
However, Alec has already built a reputation of uncompromising service and incredible
food for over 15 years with Naman’s Catering, Inc. Their parents
have clearly instilled the value of kindness and hard work in them.
We welcome you to enjoy the hard work of hundreds of employees and
generations of Namans as we proudly present our latest project. Regardless
of your
preference, dine in, take out or shopping for the perfect recipe
list Naman’s Midtown
Market is prepared to exceed your expectations of superior food and genuine service.
Our stunning produce will be the first thing you see as you enter. As you catch
